2025 Recap | Weekly Newsletter

Hi Reader - I hope you had an amazing week, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Joyous Kwanzaa!

2025 Recap!

In leiu of "What's New With You?", I wanted to reflect on 2025 which is coming to a close soon. This year, I elected not to make a vision board; instead, I just set aside some goals for myself.

2025 GOALS

Trust in God’s Plan

300 Days on Duolingo

180 Days of Reading the Bible

180 Days of Exercise

Read 1 book/month

Grow Melanin.in.Med

Let's just say, I failed almost every one of these goals. BUT I made progres in each one. I started reading the Bible. I've been leaning on prayer and worship during difficult times. I read 10 books this year. I had a stint this summer where I went to the gym 3-4x weekly. I practiced my Spanish and passed my medical Spanish certification test at one of the hospitals I rotate at in NYC. And I believe I helped a lot of premeds and medical students on their journeys.

So while I might not have hit the marks I set (nor did I track them closely enough), I am proud of myself. 2025 was a year of uncomfortable growth. I am thankful for God's hand on every part of my life, and I believe that 2025 was no different.

I plan set my 2026 goals before the new year, but until then, I am soaking up some rest at home and reflecting on 2025!

This week, I wanted to share something I wish I had known sooner about choosing a specialty.
Shadow early and ntentionally.

First year is a great time to explore because you often have more flexibility, but the truth is, it’s never too late to shadow. Clerkships and electives are invaluable, but in my experience, they were heavily inpatient and I spent most of my time working with residents.

If my only exposure to family medicine had been inpatient, I wouldn’t have been able to picture it as my future career. In reality, most family physicians work outpatient, moving quickly through a high volume of patients, building long-term relationships, and knowing their patients incredibly well over years of care.

That outpatient exposure completely changed how I saw the specialty.

Come back to The Med Student Corner weekly for more tips and tidbits!

Second look season is coming soon. I chatted a bit about how I am navigating that process here. Good luck!
