Catching Flights and Residency Interviews | Weekly Newsletter

Hi Reader - I hope you're having a restful Sunday! This week, I'm catching you up on all things October + continuing my interview prep series and The Match Corner. Let's get into it!

What's New with You?

Just when it seems like life is slowing down, it picks right back up! I shared my last newsletter about a month ago, after I submitted my residency application. It was only right to celebrate, so my friends and I traveled to Texas for a week, where we visited Houston, Austin, and Galveston. It was a much-needed time to relax and celebrate. After that, I headed to California and spent a few days in San Diego, then headed up to Anaheim for the AAFP FMX conference. I had the best time connecting with family medicine residents and attendings and sharing my research.

I've been settled back in NYC for about three weeks. I finally finished my BBQ tour of NYC, trekking to Hometown BBQ (which is mentioned in a Michelin guide, if that means anything??); partied the night away at our last medical school formal, celebrated Halloween, and watched some friends run the NYC marathon!

In the midst of it all, I promise I still am a medical student :) I just wrapped up my ophthalmology introductory elective (and I have so much respect for ophthalmologists because using a slit lamp is very hard!!!). Aside from that, I have been completing residency interviews. It has been so fun to learn more about programs and start envisioning where I could end up next year!

It seems like just yesterday, it was summer 2022, and I was contemplating whether I had made the right decision to move to NYC for medical school. And now, I am 7 months away from graduation. While I've had my fair share of struggles, the great moments outweigh them. NYC, and the people I've met along the way, have been everything I needed and more! So - I am not sure when life is going to slow down, but I am so thankful for every moment!

- Morgan :)

Medical School Interview Series Pt. 5

Next in this series, we will dive into the top THREE mistakes I see applicants make during medical school interviews.

#3 - Lack of Depth

Two of the goals of medical school interviews are to learn more about you and see if you would be a good fit for the medical school.

Oftentimes, I interview students and feel like they are just reciting their CV. Whether an interview is open or closed file, you should have more to talk about than what is on your written application.

Don't just recall experiences, but share stories...AND what you learned from them, why they're impactful to you, or how they have prepared you to become a physician.

I know it sounds cliché. But interviewers interview a lot of people. They likely will not remember all the details from each interview. But if your passion or enthusiasm comes across, we remember that emotion - even through a computer screen!

GOOD LUCK to everyone who is in the thick of residency applications + interviews. I collaborated with the AAFP to share an amazing resource they have to prepare medical students for the residency application process, including interviews + creating a rank list. While it has some specific information tailored to family medicine, a lot of it is applicable across specialties. Check it out here!
